Mauricio Larriera, born on August 26, 1970, is a distinguished Uruguayan coach known for his tactical acumen and adaptability. He has achieved significant titles such as the Uruguayan Championship in 2021 and the Supercup in 2022. He holds a Pro CONMEBOL license since 2023, a certificate in Sports Management since 2018, and a Pro coaching license from the AUF since 2002. Mauricio Larriera had a historic start as Newell's coach, winning his first three matches without conceding any goals, a first in the club's 85-year history in AFA tournaments. Newell's defeated Belgrano 1-0, Lanús 2-0, and Central Córdoba 1-0, leading Zone B of the Copa de la Liga with a perfect score. This achievement marks Larriera as the first coach to achieve this record for the club.

The team did not concede any goals throughout the preparation.

Larriera's team closed out a triumphant 2021 by displaying a high-flying style of football, which was the coach's greatest source of pride.

The following players were called up to the Uruguayan national team during his tenure: Kevin Dawson, Giovanni González, Joaquín Piquerez, Facundo Torres, David Terans, Agustín Canobbio, and Álvarez Martínez.

Peñarol won the group where Corinthians was considered a top contender, and then eliminated The Club Nacional de Football in the quarterfinals.

The two biggest Uruguayan football teams had not faced each other at an international level since 1999, and Peñarol won away from home with a magnificent football display.

Agustín Canobbio and Valentín Rodríguez were the authors of the spectacular goals that decided the match.

Peñarol made it to the semifinals of the competition.

BEST COACH OF THE YEAR

He received the award for the best coach of the year from the Uruguayan Football Association.

The top scorer during his tenure was Agustín Álvarez Martínez with 31 goals, followed by Ceppelini with 16 and Facundo Torres with 13.

One of the strong points of Larriera's time at Peñarol was that he promoted a large number of young players to the first team, including V. Rodríguez, M. Alonso, N. García, A. Da Silveira, N. Rossi, A. Cruz, R. Saravia, B. Mansilla, J. O'Neill, and P. López.

RECORD

Peñarol achieved a historic victory over Corinthians at Estadio Campeón del Siglo, resulting in the best international campaign of the club in the last 10 years.

Mauricio Larriera also became the first Uruguayan football coach to win five consecutive matches in international competition in the 21st century.

This win was also the biggest victory of any Uruguayan team over a Brazilian team in the history of CONMEBOL international tournaments.
